What You Can Do

This is a guest post by Joseph Lalonde. I will tell you more about my namesake at the end of this post. If you would like to guest post on my blog, take a look at my simple guidelines here. I would love to share your story.

I’ve often found myself wandering through life, trying to decipher what the plan is; “Why am I here?” “What can I do for the world?”

If you’re like me, you’ve found yourself in a similar situation.

Cutting through the Mirage

Life offers us a myriad of options. We’re told we can be a firefighter, an astronaut, or the big one, the President. These all look awesome until we start to express what we really want to be. For me, there were times I wanted to design video games, to write, to become a power-seller on eBay.

Have you ever told someone what you dream of being or doing?

Were you told, like I was, those dreams were unrealistic and that you needed stability? Yeah, that stung. And it made my world spin. Why was I told I could be anything I wanted to be? Was it a lie?

As I’ve aged, I’ve discovered it wasn’t the truth but it wasn’t quite a lie either – more of a misunderstanding.

Purpose Lies in You

I’ve come to the realization that I was put here for a purpose. What that purpose is, I sometimes wonder. Right now, it’s to equip and inspire young leaders to go out and lead.

I can inspire others to take action and lead. And I can do it well.

The truth of the matter isn’t that I can do anything I want. It’s that I can do what I was put on this earth to do. And I’m going to do my best. And the same is true for you…

You can’t do anything or everything. But you can do what you were designed to do. You can tweet that!

I’m not sure what that is for you. It’s something that you have to discover for yourself.

You have to dig deep. Take chances. Find what doesn’t work. Rejoice in what does.

My Challenge to You

I want to challenge you today: stop trying to do everything and be everything. Instead, begin focusing on what you do well, really well. And do it with excellence.

In doing so, I believe you’ll discover a purpose and fulfillment that you’ve never experienced. Satisfaction will begin to fill your life.

So, get out there and start doing what you were made to do.

Question: What things in your life do you need to stop doing so you can start doing what aligns with your purpose? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below.

  1. Great thoughts, Joe. I’m trying to figure it out one step at a time.

    1.  Tammy, that’s all we really can do. As we take each step, there’s enough light for the next.

  2. Great thoughts Joe. These same thoughts have been on my mind lately – well-meaning people tell us that we can be anything we want so long as we put our mind to it. But the truth is we are meant to be what God wants us to be, not ‘whatever’ we want. Thanks for another great reminder

    1. I totally agree, Ngina. Joe’s words have come in season.

    2. Glad to be one of those reminders that we all need from time to time Ngina. We’ve got to begin looking at what God wants us to be and not what others say we can be. Once we discover that, all things are possible.
